OSI announces new manual and grants competition to fight abuse in health care
June 26 marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a time to reflect on the victims and survivors of torture and support those campaigns working to end it. This is especially relevant in the health care field, where there has been a recognized problem of abuse, torture, and neglect in health facilities, especially to those of ethnic or sexual minorities, disabilities, or certain illnesses.
In an effort to spread awareness about abuse in healthcare, the Open Society Public Health Program has released a manual entitled 20 Mechanisms for Addressing Torture in Health Care. The manual provides descriptions of different national and international human rights systems in regards to torture in the health setting and procedures to respond to these violations. In conjunction with this release, they have also announced a grants competition for NGOs and activists seeking to combat these issues. The grants competition will be based upon proposals on how to implement the mechanisms of the manual and other tools for advocacy and action against torture in health care.
The deadline for the grants competition is August 1, 2012.
